The power of the B-side
Submitted by matt on Sun, 11/09/2008 - 00:11.The A-side and B-side have been around for half a century, each refering to the featured track (A-side, which a producer would believe to be a "hit") and another track (B-side) which was on the other side of the vinyl record which would not be released on the bands full album.
The B-side could be a number of things and was a great way for artists to give their fans a sample of music that was either unfinished at the time of release, an acoustic, a live performance, a track deemed not good enough for the album, or even a remix. Rarely the B-side would become more popular than the A-side but here are some examples you may or may not have known. I was surprised.
Oh really? And yes that is Gloria Gaynor's, I Will Survive and, The Smiths, How Soon is Now?. The B-side is a powerful addition even to this day. It gives the artist a chance to showcase other songs as well as increase it's "value for money."
