My Favorite Driving Playlist

While still sorta-kind of the subject of play lists, I'd love to bring up and discuss the kind of music to drive your car to. This is, in my opinion, something taken too casually by many. Music that sounds good on a treadmill might make you want to exit your vehicle during the rush hour traffic jam and start screaming at passing motorists, possibly while waving a firearm (this would be caused by anything related to Guns N' Roses for example).

Anyway, you'll probably notice I rarely listen to new music in the car. OCD? Probably.

For commutes and/or long drives, here's where I'm at:

1. Underworld "Rez/Cowgirl." Good techno. Long. "Rez" and "Cowgirl" were initially separate tracks as a matter of fact, but they undoubtedly belong together... sort of like peanut butter and jelly. The Live version of this song is the best one.

2. Armin Van Buuren "Love You More." This is where the line gets blurry. With a very driving (har har) beat, I would stab the "next" button on my iPod if this came on during especially heavy traffic. I generally don't find Armin to be safe driving music unless I've got a wide open stretch in front of me. I used to have a good medium tempo version of "Burned with Desire," but I can't find it again, and "Satellite" is way too heavy with voicing done by That One Irritating Female Techno Chick™ (you know the one I'm talking about) despite how much I want to like it.

3. DJ Tiesto "Adagio for Strings." Clear roads only, end of discussion.

4. Credence Clearwater Revival "Travelin' Band." One of my all-time favorites period. It's hard to be irritated while you're listening to CCR, even when you get cut off by a minivan.

5. Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode." Despite this being the campaign theme song for your pal and mine John McCain, I can still listen to it without wanting to jab out my eyes in frustrated political angst.

6. Chuck Berry "Ridin' Along in my Automobile." Oldies are goodies. Strange to contrast it with Euro techno, but there you have it.

7. Evanescence "Bring Me To Life." YES. YES I AM still listening to that. STILL. VOLUNTARILY. I enjoy Evanescence like few other bands, and despite all the concentrated radio play a while back I still thoroughly enjoy this track. Or maybe I just secretly loved Daredevil.

8. Flogging Molly "Salty Dog." Flogging Molly is another of my generally "across the board good" bands. "Salty Dog" is especially good for driving, in my opinion.

9. Fog Hat "Slow Ride." This track also reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Dazed and Confused. Although Guitar Hero has poisoned some of my favored songs (I can't really blame it, but I try anyway), "Slow Ride" is not one of them. Also surviving is:

10. The Allman Brothers Band "Jessica." I usually like instrument-heavy music anyway, but it definitely serves a nice "cool down" purpose after a day at work, say. Maybe it's just me, but I can get plenty tired of hearing people talk...and talk... and talk. For that reason, "Jessica" and the like almost always get extra play time.

11. Debussy "Reverie." Debussy essentially created the Xanax of music with "Reverie."

12. Johnny Cash "When the Man Comes Around." As an interesting side note, if you search for this (awesome) song on YouTube you'll find that every single video the track goes to is related to wars, riots or violence. I guess that's what you get when you refer to the book of Revelations for four minutes or so.

13. Johnny Cash "Hurt."

14. Nine Inch Nails "Survivalism." Another one I feel geared more towards driving and less toward being in traffic.

15. ZZ Top "Tush." Not a good ring tone to have go off around grandma, though.

16. Van Halen "Panama." This is the only one I actually feel guilty admitting to.

So, what about you? What's your list?
