A genre of music that traces its origins to Jamaica during the 1960s, reggae is an outgrowth of the subsets of rocksteady and ska, and which later birthed the disparate dub and dancehall genres. Reggae’s earliest recordings are heavily influenced by Calypso music but also the soul, primitive rock and rhythm and blues coming out of America at the time. More relaxed and given to a slower pace than ska, reggae music often included less horns in favor of a guitar-based sound (with frequent organ accompaniments).
