Gospel Music

Out of the old a capella church songs and the music of Africa came the worship music we now call gospel, which frequently involves individuals singing with a choir, organ, and even a full band set that includes drums, guitars, and more. Singers who helped put gospel on the map in the 1940s and beyond include Mahalia Jackson, The Swan Silvertones, and Marion Williams. Gospel helped influence the fledgling rock and roll movement in the 1950s, and artists like Elvis Preseley and Jerry Lee Lewis have recorded gospel.
