Begun possibly with the creation of Ambient 1: Music For Airports from Brian Eno in the late seventies, the creation of sound installations meant to perform both as art and as background sound differentiates itself from simply “quiet” music or what Eno himself saw as “canned.” However, music meant for the background could demonstrate any of the above qualities, functioning as music for relaxation, as a mood enhancer, or simply as a way to keep the room free of silence.
