I lived in Denton for five and a half years. During that time I checked out many places for music and fan fare. Below are some of the main venues which seem to be the most indie-friendly from the obscurity of their talent and performances along with knowing those who have performed as well as performing myself.

1. Hailey's - It is a big place, a nice set up, good sound system, and the staff is pretty cool.

2. The roof of Cool Beans - Great location especially if the weather is good and everyone on Fry/Hickory Street can hear your music.

3. Dan’s Silver Leaf – This Denton Indie venue is legendary. plus they just built a Fuzzy Tacos by the place for your band and the fans after the show.

4. Banter – Formally The Brickhaus Café and known for its Thursday open mic night which has had indie artists traveling from miles around to perform seven minutes of their latest tunes.
The 2nd Tuesday of each month is Hot Klub du Denton featuring the music of Django Reinhardt. You'll think you got transplanted in time to 1936 Paris.

5. Rubber Gloves - I think it is funny that this place is by a railroad track, and every time I go there to hear a band I hear trains, but it's kinda cool in a way. This is a staple for Denton indie culture. Although it looks dirty and it is away from all the other bars, it's a great place to play if you want to get loud and rowdy if you are a band or a fan.

6. J&J's Old Dirty Basement - For small bands with small crowds, J&Js Old Dirty Basement is a great venue in Denton with excellent pizza. You don't have to charge a cover, so there is a good chance people will just come and you can get some exposure. It is much of a do-it-yourself sound control and set up there.

7. House parties - For indie bands, this is perfect...if no one likes your music, you still get to party. After UNT home games or just during the holidays.

Hailey's and Rubber Gloves have "procedures" listed on their websites on how to get your band booked. Hailey's goes through a larger company called Spune Productions sometimes, and RGRS used to do something like that, but i think now management just decides who plays.
