Biography:
Some say that God keeps his eye on even the tiniest sparrow. If that's true, then God must have his eyes full with King Sparrow, a band that pretty much dares you not to watch. Hailing from the unassuming environs of Chicago's Northwest side, this handsome trio cranks out driving indie rock that walks a fine line between the studio and the garage. The rough-edged production of the group's debut EP belies a tuneful, sometimes even poignant, heart that sets King Sparrow apart from the legions of heavy-handed and/or empty-headed artists currently cluttering the indie scene.
Take a track like "Forest," for instance. Sean Price's burbling bass line melds with John McGeown's urgent, almost punk-like drumming to create an insistent, hypnotic beat that buoys Eric Georgevich's crisp guitar work and sweeping vocals. The trio bypasses showy soloing, instead pushing ahead with a coherent sound that maximizes the effect of every element. It's a tightly produced slice of rock that nevertheless maintains a gritty, spontaneous edge. That curious blend makes it impressive but unsurprising that the five-track EP was recorded in a one-day session at Chicago's B-Side Audio, with local legend Neal Ostrovsky (Tub Ring, Webb Brothers, Bon Mots) at the production table.
It's rare to come across a debut release that really whets your appetite for more, but that's exactly what King Sparrow has accomplished. Between the impending EP and an electrifying live set that's already wining the hearts and minds of indie fans, it's no wonder God has his eye on this sparrow. It won't be long before much of Chicago does too.
