An American art form that grew out of the combination of African and European cultures, jazz was birthed in the early 1900s and continued to progress and grow in popularity. The “cool jazz” period of the late 1950s was one of jazz's most influential and mainstream time periods, and while the genre doesn't have the mass appeal it did decades previous, jazz continues to be taught and innovated with other forms today.
