A notable strain of rock music that grew apart of the fledgling “alternative” movement, indie rock is frequently self-deprecating and open-ended, as opposed to more self-serious and technical music movements. Eschewing practiced playing for a less worried approach, indie rock is similar to punk in that it doesn't necessitate formally “good” singers or musicians to be a part of the genre – it is separate from punk in that it doesn't have an overriding social message.
