The United States is a whippersnapper compared to the established old cultures of Europe, but our citizens were able to create something new and uniquely American out of the forms from worlds they knew in the past. Using the folk music of their old homes as a guide, Americana burst out with new instruments (banjo, dulcimer) the world hadn't exactly seen or heard before, and which began to tell the story of life in the new world.
