Nashville is the promised land for young country songwriters and performers, and unlike many of his contemporaries, Bradley West is adept at both halves of the equation. Waxing about the good ol’ days over the a maudlin accompanying track or a skippy, positive beat, West doubles in both the quick-paced and balladeer-heavy schools of neo-traditional country. Utilizing a collection of talented backing vocalists and just-enough backing musicians (the rule in country, like R&B, is very much ‘less is more’), West has a handle on the particulars of sad and happy music, but lets his handsome croon and often biting lyricism take center stage.
Like many of his fellow hat-wearing peers – Brad Paisley included – West celebrates a distant, easier past, as on tearjerker “These Days,” which compares the easier past with the complicated and more difficult present. West also lampoons fast food on “Big Mack Donald,” but does invite everyone onto the “Slow Train,” a call for togetherness.
