Dhruva Ailman and Marco Oppedisano are from opposite ends of the country - Aliman calls California home, and Oppedisano lives in New York - but they both make intriguing instrumental music, and hey, they're both MadeLoud artists. Small world, right?
Aliman is a composer who delves into electronica and dance as frequently as ambient music. His music has appeared in diverse places, from "Keeping... Read more

Does Texas Monthly know what goes on at the Kerrville Folk Festival? The respected magazine and media sponsors appear in official signage and fest literature, but after a full day of walking across the grounds at Quiet Valley Ranch, taking in a workshop and a performance, and trying to get the sociological tick of the revelers just right, I get the impression above all else that this gathering is... Arriving at the Kerrville Folk Festival, my press contact here reluctantly sighed and asked that I send my write-up over (she suggested through post or even cassette tape, if it was "on the radio") before admitting that not a few people on the list in years past have come just to "party" with "their families" and not file a report. After explaining I wasn't a print journalist, I told her I could... Read more

"Learning experience" is a term used when a bad situation has the potential of turning into something of value in the future. My learning so far has mostly consisted of realizing that my wireless card isn't much use in the places I'm visiting that don't have a huge technology hub like Austin. A place like Ladybird Municipal Park. Where I'm now typing. The good news is that wireless is $4. But I... Read more

Barring any abductions or sudden diseases, this summer I'll be taking my show on the road. My plan is to visit, write about, and experience the myriad music festivals this state boasts during the summer. I will crisscross Texas, during which I will see the panhandle, valley, big cities, and little towns. It will take three months and it will be awesome.
I'll be working remotely/living in my van... Read more
You have been working hard producing an album, and you volunteered yourself (conveniently) to create all of the advertising and promotional materials you require...but then you sit down at your computer and you draw a blank on what to say in your copy. Do you riddle it with clever tag lines and send it off to the printers? Do you cover your ad with large mysterious artwork that appeals to... Read more
It seems like everywhere you look, someone is starting a blog. Your sister is starting a workout blog, your mom is starting a cooking blog, and your friend is starting a blog about things he despises. A plethora of blogging platforms are out there from which to choose - Myspace, Facebook, Tumblr, Wordpress, and, of course, MadeLoud! It is now easier to start a blog than ever, so why are you... One way to think about my hometown of San Antonio, Texas is to consider the city from the viewpoint of a visitor. If you're from a small town in the Valley, San Antonio has a variety of shops and stores that you won't find in south Texas. If you're from Houston or Dallas...well, San Antonio has the minimum of what you want but will rarely exceed your hopes. Growing up in SA, we were aware that... Read more

Sufjan Stevens will never complete his "50 states" series of albums, which is probably just as well. I guess the burden lies on us, citizens of the Forgotten States, to finish the job. In Sufjan fashion, I have a mix here of songs that are ostensibly by Texans or about Texas or Texas cities but which are really about something else entirely.
1. Japancakes - "Dallas"
2. Yuji Oniki - "Houston"... Read more

In past years MadeLoud has done some promotional work in an unofficial capacity at venues like The Scoot Inn and the Longbranch, giving us a first wide look at emerging artists like Peelander Z and Sleepy Sun. This year, we were in attendance in a journalistic capacity only, and promised ourselves not to drink too hard before the sun went down. In this respect, the festival was a success –... Read more

If you add all of the film hoopla and the interactive portion of SXSW in with the music, you basically have a two week festival where we once had just four days. SXSW is an ungainly beast, and save for a few basic tenants - a busy, money-making city and lots of music - no one can seem to agree on the particulars. We've encountered the Festival and the "festival" - in other words, tasted it on... Read more
