One of our favorite SXSW discoveries was the duo Silverghost, an energetic guitar and keys team made up of boyfriend/girlfriend Marcie Bolen and Deleano Acevedo. Bolen, formerly of The Von Bondies, handles the axe work and riffage, while Acevedo works with the keyboards and drum machine. Both sing, and their style ranges from up-tempo garage rock instrumentals to beat-heavy electronic punk. After a performance at the Longbranch Inn, Acevedo and Bolen spoke to us about Detroit, country music, and touring. Is this your first trip to Austin? Marcie Bolen: I’ve been here many times before. I came down here with my old band, The Von Bondies, and after that I came down here a couple of years later with friends just to hang out. It’s something fun to do – but I haven’t been back in a couple of years. Deleano Acevedo: It’s my first year here. Bolen: And we’ve actually been a band less than a year... Acevedo: ...we’ve been a band thirteen months. Bolen: Oh. (laughs) How did the band get started? Acevedo: I guess we met and we started dating a year before we started playing music. We wrote a bunch of songs, and we started with a drummer and a bassist as a four-piece. And it really didn’t go in the direction we wanted. Bolen: We kind of threw the whole four-piece thing away and started over. We weren’t feeling it. Acevedo: We were looking for something different, and so we plugged in our drum machine and some keyboards and rebuilt three songs in one night. Bolen: We started off writing songs by ourselves, so it worked out better like that. You wanted to change your sound, but did the drum machine make it more electronic than you even expected? Bolen: I guess the drum machine did make it more electronic. Acevedo: It did, definitely. We kind of miss the live drum sound, so, we just try to turn it up as loud as we can. Do you guys live in Detroit proper? Can that be true? Bolen: Not anymore. We’re not (area code) 313 anymore, we’re 248 now. We’re only three blocks north of Eight Mile, so we’re still kind of legit. Eminem lived one block north of Eight Mile, but he claims south of Eight Mile. He lived in a trailer park, right? Bolen: Yeah, we drive by there every once in awhile, whenever we go to KFC. So what’s the scene like up in Detroit now? Acevedo: It’s totally eclectic. There was the garage rock scene, but that kind of imploded. No one’s really paying attention to Detroit right now, so bands kind of started doing whatever they wanted. It’s a really small community, so every show you go to has like punk bands, a band like us, a psychedelic band – there’s just everything. Can you see it exploding again, like a new Detroit scene? Is it going to be the White Stripes all over again? Bolen: I don’t know…it doesn’t seem like it. But there are a lot of good bands. Acevedo: Everyone is so different. And bands are starting to get signed again, but not to major labels, to indie labels like Matador. Bolen: I don’t think anyone trusts signing to a major label now. Acevedo: During the garage rock thing, there were major labels offering everyone deals, looking for the next White Stripes. Bolen: People were getting screwed. What are the trials and tribulations of being in a band with your boyfriend or girlfriend? Bolen: I think being in a band with your partner is the best thing. Like Paul McCartney and his wife - they were never apart. Acevedo: We live together, we practice in our basement, and we don’t have to separate when we go on tour. Bolen: It’s hard to go on tour without your partner. And now you guys get to hang out together always! What has been your most fun stop so far on your tour? Acevedo: We just went on tour with the Murder City Devils, and they just did a reunion tour down the west coast, and the keyboard player lives in our town, Ferndale, and she really likes our band and submitted us to their booking agent. It went really well, and we played five shows with them. That has definitely been the high point. Every one of those shows was sold out. People lose their shit about that band. Acevedo: Kids just went crazy. We were real nervous, because we didn’t know if their fans would take to us – they’re pretty hardcore – but it went well, and those guys are all really nice and made us feel welcome. Bolen: We actually made some fans from it, surprisingly. So, stylistically, who influences you? I thought I heard some Cramps in there. Bolen: I love the Cramps. Cramps, Gun Club, Kinks, new stuff – of Montreal and MGMT. Acevedo: We love everything. From… Bolen: We don’t love everything. Acevedo: Well, we love tons of genres. Bolen: We’ve been listening to country. We love us some Townes Van Zandt. So there might be a country song on the next EP or album? Bolen: As long as it’s fun to play. That’s the goal, just to have fun. Visit Silverghost on RCRD LBL.
