MadeLoud recently touched base with singer-songwriter Miles Nielsen, who will be performing at the 2008 Monolith Festival in Morrison Colorado's breathtaking Red Rocks Amphitheater. You can catch Miles at the MadeLoud.com Acoustic Stage on Sunday, September 14 at 1:15 PM. Here's what the son of Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen had to say about the festival and his busy life as a musician: ML: Your music incorporates elements of rock, pop, and Americana. Are there other genres and styles are you find interesting? Anything your fans might find surprising? Nielsen: I am a fan of music… I think limiting oneself to certain genres, is a little close minded…. And I love taking a wack at some free-style rap when I’ve had to much to drink!! ML: Who are some musicians who've inspired your sound and/or your overall approach toward making music, in Chicago or elsewhere? Nielsen: I work with kids a lot on different musical projects….. it always reminds me why I continue to go at music with passion/intensity/….and remember to have fun along the way. ML: It looks like you play a lot of the instruments on your recordings. Who are some of the "friends" you mention on your MySpace page as helping out? Nielsen: Bun E. Carlos, Marc Ford, Danny Louis, Hayward Williams, Cameron McGill, Daxx Nielsen, Daniel James McMahon, this list gets longer the more I continue to write…. I really need a stopping point to my record….. ML: How did you meet Cory Chisel's band, The Wandering Sons? Nielsen: The Midwest music circuit is pretty close knit… then I Cory to record with me…. So I recorded/co-produced- Darken Your Door EP, and Little Bird LP. ML: When will Fuse be putting out your self-titled debut? Nielsen: Ha…. I guess….. I have no idea, I am pushing to have it done by the fall…. But when it’s your studio that your making the record in…. it could be the next “Chinese Democracy“ if you don’t watch out. What about that particular label drew you to them? It is my own label….. so I guess, well I plan on shopping the record a bit when it’s completed. ML: What are you hoping to get out of playing Monolith? Nielsen: I have no preconceived hopes…. I am just thrilled to be a part of the festival, there are some great bands playing, and Red Rocks isn’t to shabby of a venue. ML: Are there other acts you're looking forward to seeing while at Monolith? Nielsen: Band of Horses… Sharon Jones…well there are quite a few… ML: >It looks like a big chunk of your summer is a tour with Joshua James. How did you end up gigging together? Nielsen: Cory Chisel…. He asked me to go out with him, so we are currently on the road playing with Joshua.. ML: Is playing with Cory Chisel your main gig, or are you hoping to devote more time to your solo music in the future? Nielsen: Cory keeps me pretty busy…… I devote a lot of time to my own project as well, but I love to work… so the more I can put on my plate the better off my music is…. You can’t take time off in this business and stay focused on creating, at least that’s how it is for me…. The more I am immersed in music…. The easier it is to get to that special place where the music can come through you.. Miles kicks off Sunday's Acoustic Stage at 12:30 pm. - Michael Keefe You may republish this article if you link back to this original.
